In conjunction with an upcoming training Harmony Vol. Fire Department has scheduled on Saturday, 12/13/2025, Iredell Water Corporation will be performing proactive water main flushing at hydrants at John Deere Ln and along Hwy 21 north to Powell Bridge Rd on the following schedule:
- Dates: Thursday, December 11th, 2025
- Time: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
The following areas may be affected:
- John Deere Ln., Little Wilkesboro Rd., Harmony Hwy., Powell Bridge Rd and surrounding roads.
During this time, customers may experience:
- Temporary drops in water pressure
- Discoloration in the water
If you notice discolored water, please open your cold-water faucet only and allow the lines to flush until the water runs clear. We recommend refraining from using water during the flushing hours if possible, to avoid drawing discolored water into your plumbing system. Avoid using hot water during this time to prevent discolored water from entering your water heater.

Why is the Water Discolored?
Discolored water is typically caused by naturally occurring minerals, such as iron and manganese, that are present in the water system. These minerals can accumulate in water mains over time and may become dislodged during activities which cause high velocity flows of water in the distribution system. Examples may be the use of hydrants by emergency personnel or unauthorized use of hydrants, water main flushing, or water main breaks or repairs.
Is It Safe to Use?
While discolored water may appear unappealing, it does not pose a health risk. The presence of iron and manganese in the water is harmless, and the discoloration is purely aesthetic.
What Should You Do?
If you notice discolored water:
- Run cold water only from a faucet (preferably in a bathtub) for several minutes to flush your internal plumbing system.
- Avoid using hot water during this time, as it may draw discolored water into your water heater.
