Update-Scheduled Water Main Flushing Notice – Fairmont Rd, Lentz Rd, Church’s Lake Rd, & Tomlin Mill Rd area

March 06, 2026

Iredell Water Corporation will be performing proactive water main flushing at hydrants and the ends of water mains to maintain water quality during the following schedule:

  • Dates: Tuesday, March 10th through Friday March 13th, 2026
  • Time: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM each day

The following areas will be affected:

  • All of the following roads:
    • Fairmont Rd, Mitchell Farm Rd, Lentz Rd, Lundy Rd, Windrow Ln, & Hebron Church Rd.
  • Portions of the following roads:
    •  Tomlin Mill Rd (from Fairmont to Jennings Rd) Hwy 21 (from Fairmont to Church’s Lake Rd) and Church’s Lake Rd (from Hwy 21 to the bridge)

During this time, customers in and near these areas may experience:

  • Temporary drops in water pressure
  • Discoloration in the water

 

We recommend minimizing or refraining from using water during the flushing hours, if possible, to avoid drawing discolored water into your private service line or plumbing system. If you notice discolored water, please open your cold-water faucet only and allow the lines to flush until the water runs clear. This should take less than 5 minutes for a typical length service line. Avoid using hot water during this time to prevent discolored water from entering your water heater tank.

 

Why is the Water Discolored?


Discolored water is typically caused by naturally occurring minerals, such as iron and manganese, that are present in the water system. These minerals can accumulate in water mains over time and may become dislodged during activities which cause high velocity flows of water in the distribution system. Examples may be the use of hydrants by emergency personnel or unauthorized use of hydrants, water main flushing, or water main breaks and repairs. We perform proactive flushing to lessen the chances of dingy or discolored water during these high flow events.

 

Is It Safe to Use?


While discolored water may appear unappealing, it does not pose a health risk. The presence of iron and manganese in the water is harmless, and the discoloration is purely aesthetic.

 

What Should You Do?


If you notice discolored water:

  1. Run cold water only from a faucet (preferably in a bathtub with an individual cold water valve or an outside spigot on the furthest end of the home from where the water enters the home) for several minutes to flush your internal plumbing system.
  2. Avoid using hot water during this time, as it may draw discolored water into your water heater tank.

If the discoloration persists after flushing, please contact our office for assistance.
